Refinishing Stair Treads: A Dark Stain, White Risers Look

A staircase is one of the first things people see when they walk into a home, and worn, scuffed treads make the whole entry look tired.

A popular update is to stain the treads a deep brown and paint the risers and skirt boards a clean white. The contrast makes each step stand out and looks good with most floors.

The work starts with sanding each tread down to bare wood. Curved and winding stairs take extra time, because every tread has a different shape.

The stain is applied by hand with the grain, then finished with several coats of a durable clear finish that holds up to daily foot traffic.

The risers are caulked where they meet the treads and painted with sharp, straight lines.
